A sculpture is first created in wax, with a supporting structure of wax ‘rods’ – these are called “risers” and they provide the escape channels for the molten bronze when it is poured into the cast.

At the top of the sculpture is a wax cone called a “sprue cup” into which the bronze will eventually be poured.
