The inspiration for this painting is the rockface at the Cow & Calf Rocks, Ilkley. The cracks and crevices are well known to rock climbers - and many have their own names, such as "Napoleon", "Josephine" and "The Girdle Traverse". See also the two canvases below - Horizontal Hold and Vertical Hold showing close-up views of some of the climbs.
